Permit Kits – Community Impact

In November 2021, Fairfax Futures received a $7,500 Family Child Care Business Development Grant from Wells Fargo. Grant funds were used to purchase materials that Fairfax County residents need to pass the family child care permit inspections conducted by Fairfax County’s Community Education and Provider Services (CEPS) and the Fire Marshal’s Office. The inspections are the last part of the permit process after applicants have completed all other requirements. Although grant funds have been fully expended, Fairfax Futures continues to fundraise for this effort to support the provision of these kits to residents who have completed all steps, other than the two inspections. These kits include materials such as first aid supplies, carbon monoxide and fire alarm detectors, and safety items such as cabinet latches and outlet covers.

The cost of one kit is over $200 and thus far 23 kits have been distributed to family child care educators across Fairfax County representing a total of $4,600 in savings. “These are the things that the providers would have to buy. Finances are very hard now and I appreciate the donors who worked with Fairfax Futures and the county to make this possible. Thank you for helping us to take care of the kids in Fairfax County,” said Mennetta Smith, an early childhood educator.

If you would like to assist more early childhood educators to formalize their business setup through this effort, we welcome your support. This initiative not only reduces the financial burden on providers but also ensures that children receive care in environments that meet rigorous safety standards, thereby fostering a safer and more supportive community for all. Your generous gift will support the provision of materials for the kits.
