Pre-School Programs Decrease Need for Special Education

Children enrolled in state-supported early childhood education programs were less likely to be placed in special education by the end of third grade in a recent study. This resulted in significant savings to school districts, as special education costs nearly twice as much as regular classroom education. The researchers examined two North Carolina programs, a pre-school program for four-year-olds and a program that provided family and health services for children from birth to age five.
